Essential Oils

Many of you may not be aware that our team at Jewel Toned Interiors is very conscious of the environment and the impact that our designs have on the planet. Both Joy and I are LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) Accredited and have become Vegan Certified Designers.

Now, why am I telling you this when the blog is labeled, “Essential Oils”? Many, and by many I mean most, products emit VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) into the air we breathe. As Interior Designers, we are very aware of the products we specify within the spaces we design for our clients. We are selective in choosing products or materials that have little to no VOC’s and request sustainable backup from manufacturers that validate this claim. Why do we not have the same attention to these selections in our homes?

My sister, Joelle, and I were introduced to essential oils many years ago by our Aunt, who at the time was going through chemotherapy for breast cancer.  Essential oils she says helped keep her grounded and positive during that tough time in her life.  I always saw her diffusing oils in the house when I was over but never really inquired about them until this year. What are essential oils you may ask? Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that retain the natural smell and flavor, or “essence,” of their source. They have been used for thousands of years for both their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Whether inhaled or rubbed on the skin, these powerful extracts can stimulate various areas of your limbic system, which is a part of your brain that plays a role in emotions, behaviors, sense of smell, and long-term memory.

Discovering how terrible the chemical ingredients in so many products that we inhale, topically put on our skin, use as cleaning agents or ingest to treat a symptom was frightening. Why not create our own products that are safe and chemical-free to use? Let’s face it, we are all challenged by stress, anxiety, muscle pain, sleep deprivation, and more on a daily basis, raise your hand if you’re tired of saying you’re tired!  I was over popping pills made from chemicals that only provided temporary relief. After researching for quite some time on the best essential oils to use, I landed on Young Living (my aunts preference as well.) I love their products as they have a patented seed to seal® promise, guaranteeing only the best oil quality and dilution. That is just my preference, but let’s support everyone out there advocating for oil use! I do recommend you read every label of the brand you use and make sure it says 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oil. Try the “paper towel test” when selecting an essential oil brand. Simply place on a paper towel one drop of essential oil and what it either grows or stays compact in a circle. If the circle grows it means there are diluting agents in the essential oil which can affect its true benefits.

All the information out there on EO’s can be overwhelming, Joelle and I decided to create our own Instagram account as a catch-all to reference recipes we make and EO information on the fly. Feel free to follow us @oilsandextracts for easy tips and recipes to promote wellness using essential oils!

Next time you find yourself in the wrinkle cream aisle or reaching for a harsh cleaning agent, think about how the ingredients are affecting your body. Is there a better, more sustainable, chemical-free way to clean your countertop? Stop your headache? Sleep better at night? Get rid of wrinkles? Make your house smell amazing?
Stop a sore throat? That answer is YES!

Happy Oiling!
