Before I started my internship with Jewel Toned Interiors, I had no idea what to expect. From day one, I was immediately immersed into the world of design. The Gems greeted me with enthusiasm, and Ebony, JTI's Studio Coordinator, provided a comprehensive schedule for the week. My first day began with training sessions led by Designers Karissa, Suzette, and Cindy. These sessions covered everything from JTI’s branding guidelines to their AutoCAD standards, to the redlining of Design Documents.
Over the following three months, I found myself involved in supporting over 10 projects. This immersion allowed me to experience every phase of a project, leading to significant personal growth. Additionally, I gained valuable insights into the business side of interior design. Working alongside JTI’s CEO, Joy, I gained first-hand exposure to the inner workings of writing a proposal and business development strategies crucial for sustaining a business.
Under the expert supervision of the designers, I actively participated in various stages of project development. From schematic design team sessions, where materials and finishes were thoughtfully chosen, to crafting presentations and guiding the direction of renderings that truly brought projects to life. Attending client meetings proved to be invaluable in understanding how to translate client ideas into feasible realities.
Among the standout memories were the installations – witnessing the frantic yet controlled environment that marked the culmination of each project. These moments highlighted the importance of adaptability and quick problem-solving. Observing the transition from renderings to actual spaces was inspiring, fueling my excitement for a future career in this field.
Reflecting on my journey, I am fulfilled and thankful. The guidance and mentorship from all the Gems were instrumental. Their collective effort ensured that my internship experience was enriching and enlightening, leaving me prepared to return to the University of Florida with a profound appreciation for this invaluable opportunity.
