Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, I wanted to share a little bit about an amazing experience the Gems had last month as participants in the Gilda's Club of South Florida Race for Hope. If you aren't familiar with Gilda's Club, it’s a non-profit organization that supports cancer patients and their families through one of life's most challenging journeys. The club is named after the iconic comedian Gilda Radner, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer. Her legacy lives on through the incredible work of the organization, offering a supportive community for those affected by cancer. Gilda's Club provides free programs like support groups, educational lectures, and healthy lifestyle programs. Cancer awareness and support are crucial pillars in any community. That's why when Kristian White of Gilda's Club South Florida let Joy and me know about the Race for Hope, we were eager both to support individuals in our community affected by cancer and to participate in a meaningful activity with the Gems!
As the sun rose on Saturday, September 23rd, our team arrived at the NSU campus with our hearts full of enthusiasm. Joy even brought her mini Gem, Isla, along with her, who was very excited about the color run. While we set up, we saw many familiar faces and connected with lots of new people, too. Seeing so many individuals and companies come together for this event was heartwarming. We mingled, Joy, Isla, and I prepared to tackle the 5K course, and Karissa and Cindy welcomed individuals to our company booth with some much needed snacks and refreshments. It was also a lovely surprise to see Gregg Goldstein, our CMO, with his family at the race!
Running a 5K is no small feat, especially in the Florida heat. The encouragement of the volunteers put a smile on our faces, and before we knew it, the finish line was in sight. As the first Gem to finish the race, I got to see the rest of the Gems cross the finish line and celebrate their accomplishments with them. Joy got a new personal best (13:19 pace), and so did I (9:57)! Those weren't the only milestones on our team: Joy's daughter, Isla, won first place in her age category!
The community's efforts were a success. We all managed to raise over $75,000 to support Gilda's Club. This 5K event, with runners from all walks of life, served as a reminder of the power of community and the importance of supporting those who need it most.
Participating in the Gilda's Club South Florida 5K run was an unforgettable experience for our team. The event was not just about lacing up our running shoes and hitting the pavement, but also about coming together as a team to make a difference in the fight against cancer. It showcased the incredible impact that individuals, working together, can have on the lives of those affected by cancer. We hope our story inspires you to get involved in your community and support causes that are close to your heart. Together we can make a difference and spread hope in the face of adversity.
