If you haven’t heard, we’re completing a public charter school on the west coast of Florida, Marco Island Academy. This project is close to my heart as my father, sister and brother-in-law are the Architects of this beautiful educational facility. Check them out at www.ldgfla.com!
This is our first educational project and it definitely won’t be our last. We love research and thoroughly enjoyed educating ourselves on the impact that design has on schools and students. Biophilia, or the incorporation of nature, is a huge contributor to students' mental state. Also, studies have proven that painting the front wall of a classroom a different color than the surrounding walls increases a student's attention span.
Marco Island Academy’s logo is a majestic manta ray. MIA’s logo incorporates a beautiful ocean inspired blue as their main brand color. A dark navy also plays as a secondary hue. We had fun incorporating subtle elements of the ocean into the floor color and decorative pendants in the cafe’ ceiling. Looking over the second floor railing gives you an excellent viewpoint of the manta ray swimming along the floor in their Manta Ray Cafe’. Empowering the next generation is MIA’s mission so we incorporated the word EMPOWER down the staircase. This staircase was intentionally designed to provide additional seating for students to sit and hang out between classes.
Their mascot and branding colors are a focal in the graphics throughout the facility, showing off their school pride at every turn. You can see their brand integrated into the signage details for the classrooms and offices as well as aiding in wayfinding. Even the student lunch terrace has a subtle nod towards the waves in the ocean with the incorporation of various plant types in a living wall.
We cannot wait to see this education project be complete next Spring! Be sure to check out our social media accounts for construction updates as we get closer to the finish line! GO RAYS!
